What Is Sublimation Printing? Why It's Best for Rally Towels
Sublimation printing puts ink inside the fabric instead of on top of it. That's why a sublimated towel stays bright and soft wash after wash, with no cracking or peeling.
If you've ever had a team shirt where the logo started flaking off after a few washes, that was ink sitting on the surface. Sublimation works differently. Heat turns special ink into a gas, the gas soaks into polyester fibers, and when it cools the color becomes part of the fabric itself.
At CEA Merch Group, we use sublimation for our rally towels, golf towels, and blankets. Here's how it works and why it's the best choice for team gear.
How it works
- Design. You send your logo, team name, or idea. We build a full-color mockup for you to approve.
- Print the transfer. We print your design in mirror image onto special transfer paper using sublimation ink.
- Lay out the blanks. White polyester towels go flat on our large-format heat press, with the transfer paper on top.
- Press. The press closes with heat around 400°F and firm pressure. The ink turns to gas and moves into the fabric.
- Reveal. We lift the paper, and the design is now part of the towel. After it cools, it's cut, checked, packed, and shipped.
Because the whole towel can be printed at once, designs can run edge to edge in as many colors as you want. Screen printing, by contrast, needs a separate screen for every color.
Why it's the best choice for rally towels
Sublimation gives you the brightest, longest-lasting print on a polyester towel, especially for full-color or detailed designs.
| Sublimation | Screen printing | Embroidery | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Soft, nothing on the surface | Raised ink layer | Raised thread, stiff |
| Colors | Unlimited, including photos and gradients | Each color needs its own screen | Limited thread colors |
| Print area | Edge to edge | Usually a set area | Small area |
| After washing | Doesn't crack or peel | Can crack over time | Durable, can pucker |
| Best for | Full-color logos, photos, names | Simple 1–2 color designs | Small logos on premium items |
One thing to know: sublimation works on white or light-colored polyester. That's why our towels are polyester microfiber. It's light, soft, absorbs sweat, and holds color better than cotton.
A colored towel, like a green or blue one, is a white towel with the background color printed on. So you still get any color you want.
